VALENTINE HAIKU ♥
I'm into love. And calligraphy. So when Pen Heaven asked me to get involved with their Valentine Haiku project, I couldn't say no. The brief was to create a Haiku [a Japanese short poem, featuring 3 lines, of 5, 7 & 5 syllables] and then to write it out using one of their super fancy pens. See below the pewter beauty I chose!
A Haiku is traditionally written on the subject of love, nature and emotions, and often includes a juxtapositional element. I'm generally better with pictures than I am words... although I've always seen beauty in language, so I gave it my best shot, and as per usual snuck some stars in! I created two versions using black and white ink, representing the dark and light theme; you can see the finished piece below.
In the original I added some golden touches in for the stars, which I've got pinned up in the studio - since it is the season. Although, I'm not a huge fan of the commercialness of Valentine's day, (I hate the idea of forced roses on 14th February & neglected romance throughout the year) I do think any celebration of love and giving is special, be it with partners, friends, family. Everyone needs a little love, and there can always be more flowers.
Thanks for asking me to contribute Pen Heaven! Head over to their blog to see some other calligrapher's work, including Olive & Reid and Oakleaf Calligraphy.
